How did your education at UIW prepare you for what you are doing today?
The education and experiences I received while at UIW were instrumental in preparation for my current position as assistant professor at the Feik School of Pharmacy. Throughout the classroom portion of my education, professors allowed myself and others to practice our teaching skills in numerous ways. Professors, through mentorship, guided the development of short lectures for underclassmen and even created a special elective to continue our discussions on how to educate pharmacy students. The school also employed me as a tutor for two years, which was a great experience in one-on-one teaching. As a community pharmacist, UIW prepared me by providing great internship and experiential opportunities throughout the years of its professional program. These were real world, career developing, opportunities that allowed students a chance to implement the knowledge learned in the classroom.
What is one of the most important things you learned while you were at UIW?
The most important thing I learned at UIW was how to become a lifelong learner. UIW gave me tools and taught me the skills needed to always stay up to date on up-and-coming practices and find good answers myself.
Who influenced you the most during your time at UIW?
This is a hard question to answer. I can’t pinpoint one individual who influenced me the most, but more like all the faculty and staff helped mold me over my four years at UIW. All the professors truly had open door policies that I fully took advantage of. If I ever had questions about course work, internships or employment opportunities, I could reach out to any faculty member for help. I have stayed connected with many of my professors over the years and they continue to be great mentors today.
How does your current position reflect the mission of the university?
Since I work at the Feik School of Pharmacy, I follow the mission of the university every day. I do my best to help develop the students as a whole person, trying to give real-world examples of what will be expected of them.
Why did you decide to join the UIW Alumni Association Board?
I decided to join the alumni board to give back to the university that has given so much to me. By serving on the alumni board, I will meet new graduates, build my personal network and help future graduates navigate university life. UIW taught me that service to the local community was a key mission. What better way to serve and reach more people than the alumni board?
